Nach einer knappen Woche optischer Üppigkeit und dauerhafter Freundlichkeit freue ich mich wieder auf die alteuropäische Mürrischkeit und auf sparsames deutsches Design. Das amerikanische Bier wird mir fehlen - bitte keine Kommentare dazu, einfach als Faktum nehmen -, meine Freunde hier auch. Den mir von Avis zugewiesenen Chevrolet Trailblazer mit texanischem Kennzeichen fasse ich als symbolischen Abschied von der Ära GWB auf.

Ich verabschiede mich mit einem Zitat von Alexis de Tocqueville, dem Thema entsprechend aus der englischen Übersetzung seiner "Über die Demokratie in Amerika":

"In America, the passion for material prosperity is not always exclusive but it is general; if everyone's experience of it is different, nevertheless it is felt by all. All men are preoccupied with the need to satisfy the slightest of their bodily needs and to provide for the little conveniences of life." (Band 2, Teil 2, Kap. 10)

Und damit wir uns nicht über unsere amerikanischen Brüder und Schwestern leichthin überheben, schieben wir seine späteren Sätze aus dem gleichen Kapitel nach:

"In America, I have never met a citizen so poor that he did not cast a glance of hope and envy toward the pleasures of the rich or whose imagination did not anticipate the good things which fate subbornly refused to him.

Alternatively, I have never observed among the wealthy of the United States that arrogant contempt for material prosperity which sometimes manifests itself in the most opulent and dissolute aristocracies."
