Ich vermute, die Arbeit als "Bücherwurm" hätte ihm im tiefsten Herzen mehr behagt als die Leitung der Congregatio... und ich könnte mir vorstellen, daß er die Worte Jesu an Petrus im Johannes-Epilog auf ganz eigene Weise liest.
Das hat er auch tatsächlich getan, in seiner eigenen Weise, wie Du sagst: Schon in seinem Bischofswappen taucht der Bär des hl. Korbinian auf; in seinen autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen verknüpft er ihn mit einer Psalmenmeditation von Augustinus und schreibt dann: "Der bepackte Bär, der dem heiligen Korbinian das Pferd oder wohl eher den Maulesel ersetzte, sein Maulesel wurde - gegen seinen Willen, war er so und ist er nicht ein Bild dessen, was ich soll und was ich bin?... Inzwischen habe ich mein Gepäck nach Rom getragen und wandere seit langem damit in den Straßen der Ewigen Stadt. Wann ich entlassen werde, weiß ich nicht, aber ich weiß, daß auch mir gilt: Dein Packesel bin ich geworden, und so, gerade so bin ich bei dir." (Aus meinem Leben. Erschienen 1998)
